The Latest Letter in Your Arsenal for Healthy Skin Care

Vitamin K, a nutrient widely used in massage oils and creams, plays a huge role in the health and beauty of our skin. It’s a fat-soluble vitamin that that the human body requires to keep functioning properly. Fat-soluble vitamins like K, A, D and E are generally obtained by eating a balanced diet, however, some people require additional amounts in supplemental forms. Our bodies absorb these vitamins through our fatty tissue where they can then go to work. K, for example, helps the body with blood coagulation, bone health and reducing the buildup of calcium in the blood. It is important to note that the human body typically does not store as much K as it does A or D which means a person can experience deficiency quickly.

There are a variety of types of vitamin K: K-1 which is found in plant sources, K-2 found in animal products and K-3, K-4 and K-5 which are all synthetically derived. Some basic sources of K-1 and K-2 are eggs, butter, liver, spinach, kale and Swiss chard. Low fat and lean animal products do not contain much of it. Importantly, your body is going to absorb the fat-soluble vitamin K much better if you eat these sources with an accompanying wholesome fat. My favorite way of loading up on Vitamin K is with this green smoothie. The avocado provides that wholesome fat while the matcha, lemon juice, and dates provide a balance of sweet and sour.

Kale-Avocado Smoothie

Add to your favorite blender:

1 c. of pure coconut water

1 tbsp. of fresh lemon juice

1 tsp. of matcha powder (ground green tea)

1 c. of kale

1 c. of spinach

1/4 to 1/2 avocado

2 pitted dates (we need it a little sweet right!)

1 cup of ice
