I’m pretty up on the non-Western philosophies and approaches to health and wellness and even I was a little confused about Reiki before I tried it. Are you curious too? Read on for a very brief introduction. Want to really learn about it? Well, come try it of course! Our practitioners are happy to teach you the background and theories behind their treatments. They are so knowledgeable! And there really isn’t much to lose, except perhaps some stress, tension, and negativity! Let’s dig in!
Reiki is a Japanese form of stress reduction and relaxation. It starts with Energy, with a capital E. We call it “chi” or “ki”. It’s our life force. It’s universal. It flows through us. We can feel it but we can’t physically see it. Our Aura is the energy field surrounding a physical body. The Aura has several different layers or bodies. I’m not going to get into all of them because, quite frankly, I’ll probably do a poor job of it but the different layers encompass the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional. How the life force flows through our aura, our physical and spiritual body, lies at the core of Reiki.
Chakras are centers, points in our bodies through which energy enters and leaves our bodies. The chakras connect with ever layer of our aura, physical, mental, spiritual, emotional. Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning vortex or spinning wheel. When they are balanced and open, the chakras spin like fan, bringing energy in and out of our bodies. Each one has a specific role and together they work as a whole. In times of stress, emotional, physical, or whatever, they can become blocked, trapping energy and preventing it from flowing freely. When this happens, we are out of balance and harmony.
The goal of a balancing treatment is to identify any blockages and trapped energy in the seven main chakras and to work to open them. This rebalances the body, strengthens your aura and allows energy to flow freely and openly. To begin, a client is fully clothed, eyes closed, and laying on a massage table. The treatment itself, in terms of the body work, is actually quite simple: a gentle laying of hands on or above the body. The actual experience is different for everyone. Some people feel sensations such as heat or tingling. Some people fall asleep. Some people feel nothing.
Benefits of Reiki can include:
- Releases tension and stress in the body
- Aids in sleep
- Reduces blood pressure
- Assists in pain relief (both acute and chronic)
- Emotional clarity
- Supports the body’s natural healing abilities
